Montezuma is tiny seaside town know for its natural beauty abundant wildlife, and magnificent waterfalls. It is nestled on the slopes of the towering hills that overlooked the town. A steep road descends from the mountain, and then suddenly - there is Montezuma: a quaint and charming village perched a the edge of the sea.

The town has a festive atmosphere, and everyone seems to be in a happy state of mind. The main street is lined with artisans selling their creations, on the many cafes beckon with tantalizing aromas and cold beverages. In by any Montezuma everything is waiting walking distance and there is so clear that almost days you can see across the golf to the mountains of Jaco - a distance of 50-60 Kms. Just south of Montezuma you will find at series of magnificent waterfalls with deep swimming holes below the cool, cascading waters. The falls will appear suddenly around the bend after you have hiked upriver about 20 minutes. The lower fall is easily accessible, but the upper falls require scrambling up the steep mountain face - an adventure in itself. For those less intrepid, the upper falls can also be approached from above by hiking in near Butterfly Gardens. No one should leave Montezuma without seeing these falls! The zip-line canopy tour, just up the hill from the Butterfly Gardens, allow you to "fly" over the waterfalls and the river. You will shoot through the canopy while enjoying spectacular views of the ocean and the waterfalls.

A leisurely 2-hour walk along the beach north from Montezuma will bring you to Playa Cocalito, where you'll find another waterfall flowing from the cliff-top into the azure sea. You can also get there on horseback if you don't feel like walking. On this hike you are very likely to see some of the abundant wildlife and spectacular scenery that helps make Montezuma famous.

On Saturday morning there is Farmers Market in the park at the center to town. Here you can buy organic veggies, local products or souvenirs. There is often a group of musicians jamming, so if you play, feel free to bring your instrument and join in.

If the sea calls you, there are panga boats for hire for deep-sea fishing trips, or sign up for a tour of Isla Tortuga - for a day of snorkeling complete with tropical lunch. Be sure to bring a banana for Philomena, the collared peccary that often visits during lunch-time.
